I've been dealing with an annoyingly unreliable internet connection for the past few months, so not only have I been updating even less than usual but rarely ever gotten around to commenting or replying to comments when I meant to. Add to that the distraction of Tumblr and I feel like such an unintentionally cold and distant LJ friend, heh. So FINALLY a few things I've meant to update about...

It's probably impossible the Game of Thrones hype hasn't already reached you in some form already (especially if you follow my Tumblr which is embarrassingly full of GoT stuff lately), but to reiterate, if you haven't tried watching any of it yet you are quite the miserable sod. XD It isn't since I started BSG and it was like nothing I could have expected that I've loved a series this much after just the first episode. It's so good that at first I was resolved about waiting a few more years to read the books so I could enjoy one or two more seasons not knowing what happens, but after the way the finale ended it's pretty hard to wait to find out what's next, so I've finally caved and cracked open the first book. I think once I finish AGoT I'll have to do a top ten list of scenes that weren't included in Season 1 as well as original scenes in the show not from the text. (The latter might have some very defiant inclusions of Ros stuff because I bite my thumb at all the hate for her. :P)

I usually don't pay a lot of attention to the Emmys, but considering how unlikely it can be for a fantasy that isn't even terribly accessible like True Blood to get this kind of recognition, I'm really pleased about the nominations it got. For it to have not just slipped by unnoticed in its first season is good enough, and probably the only great injustice they could do the show this year is not give it the main title design award. Though Peter Dinklage probably has it in the bag as well since he was smart enough to submit in the supporting actor category.

Those who've watched most of the season will get why I was a bit amused when I saw it was nominated for hairstyling specifically for the episode "A Golden Crown"....Heh. Heh.

Just for the lulz let's talk about how ridiculous True Blood still is. Read more... )

I'm having way too much fun jumping on the "writing bits of Harry Potter personal canon" bandwagon on Tumblr, and it's also making me realize just how long ago it was that I first got into the books. I feel like I used to have such a detailed and clear idea in my head of what some characters like Tonks and Sirius are really like to me and it's gotten a bit vague now that I haven't written any HP fanfiction or even had plot bunnies in my head for a long time.

I'm also looking for just about any kind of recs of HP fics because I feel like finding some decent classics to read and literally don't even know where to start because I never happened to read as much as I wrote in this fandom during the golden age. I made that post and then realized you can't even post URLs in replies or asks on Tumblr (ugh Tumblr you are kind of useless for some things), but if anyone has bookmarks or rec lists they want to direct me to I'd be happy. :)

[livejournal.com profile] jolinar_rosha asked me...
1. Out of all your uni subjects, which one is your absolute favourite?
I'm not at college/university anymore but one of my favorite classes I ever took was Anti-Hero Lit.
2. If you could travel into any of the worlds of your fandoms, which one would it be and why?
Middle Earth, but only if I could stay and live there. I've always wished I could live in the Shire in a cozy little hobbit hole with a pretty little garden. Seriously, if I'm ever absurdly rich, I will have myself a hobbit hole built somewhere in the countryside in Europe.
3. Do you cook? If yes, what's your favourite dish to cook?
Sort of? Haha. I'd like to learn how to cook a lot of new things but it's something I rarely take the time for. Home-made macaroni and cheese would be my favorite thing I can make now, LOL.
4. If you were a ridiculously-rich Hollywood producer, and could make *any* book into a film/series, which one would you choose?
I think it's time a big-budget franchise of Animorphs was made because the TV show was fail, hehe. MY GENERATION REMEMBERS.
5. If we lived in the middle ages, and assuming that gender/social status was of no consequence, what profession would you choose for yourself?
Man, this is the best question ever. XD Something that would let me ride a horse all day, like a messenger.
I am downloading Misfits right now even though I've been trying to hold off on starting any new shows soon because I can't get away from it on Tumblr and it looks/sounds so awesome and the temptationnn. Plus the twin very evilly started watching it without me even after we expressly had an agreement that we would watch this together and for once enjoy a show for the first time squeeing over it in unison and all, since we always end up nagging each other into watching the new things we get into anyway so it only makes sense. (DAMN YOU LAYLA. FOR SHAME.)

I also keep thinking fleetingly about finally starting Lost because listening to Michael Giacchino's music for it has me like What is WITH these track titles? And this intense creepy-sounding stuff? What IS this show? LOL. But this seems like a terrible idea because based on everything I've heard I will probably be totally bonkers for it and not be able to stop watching it, and...yeah, job hunting. That's what I'm supposed to be doing. Responsible things...

Anyway, mostly just posting for this meme....

I know very little about some of the people on my friends list. Some people I know relatively well. But here's a thought: why not take this opportunity to tell me a little something about yourself. Any old thing at all. Just so the next time I see your name I can say: "Ah, there's so and so...she likes office supplies." I'd love it if every single person who friended me would do this. (Yes, even you people who I know really well. Then post this in your own journal. In return, ask me anything you'd like to know about me and I'll give you an answer.)

For me [livejournal.com profile] timelady_watson picked...

[1][2][3][4][5]

[1] supernatural; carry on wayward sons ([livejournal.com profile] shinyhappicons
I was wanting a cool-looking SPN icon with the Chevy Impala and loved this the second I found it. I like the representation of the "two vagabonds walking the earth like cowboys all over America" formula of the show.
[2] doctor who; rose & jack ([livejournal.com profile] bunnyicons)
Loooove this episode, and I love the relationship between Rose and Jack, as short-lived as their time traveling together was. The subtle way the Doctor/Rose/Jack dynamic played out is a perfect example to me of how a love triangle can exist between characters without being some kind of forced and trite point of drama or tension between parties who should be able to trust each other (something I end up trying to explain in so many discussions about the possibilities of Spock/Uhura/Kirk or Aang/Katara/Zuko, but...alas). Anyway, who wouldn't want to dance to Glenn Miller right in front of Big Ben?
[3] sherlock; sherlock/john awkward ([livejournal.com profile] kasienka_nikki)
How can you not keep an icon of this moment handy? LMAO. Watson's face when he looks away from Sherlock here is so priceless, it's the most hilarious scene in the whole show so far.
[4] avatar; sokka ([livejournal.com profile] sharp_pastels)
Sokka is the mf-ing man. Needed an icon of him looking badass with a sword. I'm not very picky about my AtLA icons because the awesomeness can speak for itself in simple images, LOL.
[5] skins; cook/effy ([livejournal.com profile] epiclullaby)
I actually prefer Effy with Freddie (and Cook with...Naomi, sort of, in a doomed and never-gonna-happen way). But I just liked this icon when I saw it because they look pretty together.

—————

Because I always seem to get really behind on Doctor Who, I hadn't finished the very end of Series 5 for a while and I just watched the last two episodes + the Christmas special. The finale was great if I didn't think about it too hard and just enjoyed the ride (I mostly enjoyed the final ten minutes or so and that it was probably the first episode throughout which I never particularly regretted River's presence). But..."A Christmas Carol"! OMG was it good. I think it's definitely the best Christmas special of the new series (and this is coming from someone who actually likes "The Runaway Bride," heheh), and it's probably tied with "The Eleventh Hour" as my favorite episode with the new cast so far.

Spoilery specifics and stuff... )

Freaking love this...

That's two shows I love that apparently have episodes involving the Old West coming up. Hell. Yes.

—————

Oh my God, this footage from the Sherlock Holmes sequel...Why am I not the least bit surprised they'd go there? LOLOLOL. I'd say "It's like something out of fanfic" but a whole lot of the first movie you could say was almost like that anyway.
So I...started watching Supernatural...? It feels hilarious to write that because I'd been starting to feel like kind of a freak for never having seen a single episode of it, LOL. I can't say exactly why, but I was just stubbornly resisting it for a long time, even though I always thought it was something I might try watching someday in the far future when I'm no longer seeing it everywhere (often preceded by the unsavory reputation the fandom has gotten). I don't think I was annoyed by the mass popularity, but for some reason I had these snotty doubts about Supernatural being completely worth the time and got over it, maybe mostly because I was just sick of feeling left out. Haha.

Well, I'm now through all of the second season and can easily say it's a lot better than I expected. And based on what I knew about it I did honestly expect to like it, but maybe in more of a guilty-pleasure way. Of course it does have an element of cheesiness (as if that ever stopped me from liking Smallville or various anime), but Jared and Jensen are pretty capable actors who can usually sell anything the script throws at them really well, and the heavily character-oriented storytelling means everything else kind of takes care of itself and the series never feels constrained by the "monster of the week" formula that so easily gets cumbersome and boring in other shows.

I'm prepared to see how long that lasts, of course. But already I've found it one of the most impressive shows of its type I've seen as far as keeping strong continuity with everything from the established rules of its fantasy world to the characters' motivations, nuances, and overall development. So much that it's kind of feels too good to be true and I'm not sure I'll be too crushed if/when it loses a lot of that later because it does have much farther to fall than to rise (and I've seen other shows burn out in quality after much less time than this one has now stayed on TV, after all).

I've never been especially into the horror genre at all, but I've enjoyed seeing the explorations of certain urban legends that I can remember seriously freaking me out when I was a kid (forget not being able to say "Bloody Mary" out loud — I sometimes got scared of just going into the bathroom at night because of that myth). And I'm definitely a sucker for how it's all done with this dirty-bluesy-southern-gothic style with lots of classic rock usage that isn't just essential to Dean's character but fitting as part of that whole mise-en-scène. In fact, one thing that finally pushed me to check out the show sooner than later was finding out that one episode builds on the legend about Robert Johnson selling his soul to the devil. I'm finding myself having fun making a mental checklist of superstitions, rumors, and lore they could still use or make reference to in later episodes, from changelings to Jim Morrison's claims that he was haunted all his life by the spirits of some Native Americans he saw dead from a car accident when he was a kid.

The gorgeous Impala is wasted until they work in more badass car chase scenes, though. XD Which is the only kind of eye candy I will comment on, because um, of course I watch solely for the plot, are the Winchesters considered attractive or something, hadn't heard....

On with ze meme.

Every day for thirty days you post about an awesome female character. Pictures! Recs! Squee! What's not to love?

Day 1: Pepper Potts
Day 2: Martha Jones
Day 3: Toph Bei Fong

PROFESSOR MINERVA McGONAGALL
Harry Potter

It took me a while to warm up to McGonagall, but she became one of my favorite background characters in the series. She's usually so strict and by-the-book and I guess it took Order of the Phoenix to show that she can definitely disregard the rules when the rules are wrong. And in all likelihood had a crazy wild side in her youth that I bet can probably still come out after enough butterbeer.

Crowning Moments of Awesome: "It unscrews the other way." / Pretty much any time she's in Umbridge's presence and gets to pwn her and remain classy while doing so

NUMBER SIX
Battlestar Galactica

Virtually every Six we get to know in the series is fascinatingly unique, showing as a whole that a primary distinguishing trait of the model seems to be, ironically, their fierce individuality (they're the only model line that don't share one common name, after all). But even narrowing it down to just the original Caprica Six we were first introduced to, I think she stands out as one of BSG's greatest characters. She can be believably scary one moment and believably vulnerable the next, approaching human experience with such unfamiliarity and innocence that she makes the most ridiculous and unreasonable emotions look like the finest point in the masterpiece that is human nature instead of a weakness that takes away from any of her complexity.

Crowning Moments of Awesome: Turning against D'Anna and letting Anders go on Caprica / Clocking Boomer in the face when she's about to hurt Hera
...Well, I am determined to do this whole meme, but let's not take the 30-day format that literally, shall we?

Every day for thirty days you post about an awesome female character. Pictures! Recs! Squee! What's not to love?

Day 1: Pepper Potts

DR. MARTHA JONES
Doctor Who / Torchwood

Every companion has a lot weighing on their role in the story and will naturally be subject to the highest scrutiny. They come in as someone we don't know as well as we know the Doctor, but they're supposed to be just as sympathetic and more normal and relatable than him because they're the outside perspective, in other words us being taken on the journey. If you can't connect to the companion it makes the whole Doctor Who experience a little off, and Martha somehow lacked a certain je ne sais quoi to make her a character who could strongly carry the show, which I guess is in part what sadly made a lot of people just plain dislike her. But I think she's a great character as part of an ensemble, whether she's with the Doctor and Jack, the Torchwood team, or the Doctor and Donna. And still a pretty awesome lady in general. (She and Mickey are going to have the most badass babies ever, LOL.)

Crowning Moments of Awesome: Showing Miss Redfern she's not full of crap in claiming "someone of her color" could be studying to be a doctor / "You're rubbish as a human!" / Randomly knowing how to speak German, fuck yeah

TOPH BEI FONG
Avatar: The Last Airbender

It's so weird to imagine if Toph had been a boy like the creators originally decided the fourth addition to the Gaang would be. To make the blind martial arts badass trope seem new, well, it could only be a 12-year-old girl, and a second and very different female presence was exactly what the show needed anyway. (Katara's an awesome and well-rounded enough character that when she's motherly it doesn't come off as a role they just automatically dumped into the only girl's lap, but add to that how she's the main hero's love interest and often portrayed in a sort of romantically idealized way, and I just can't help but find it really refreshing when contrastingly laid-back and not-touchy-feely Toph comes in and practically lampshades all this by getting annoyed by the "sugar queen" sometimes. LOL.) It makes her different than the others and a lot of fun that she's less driven by mere righteousness or a sense of responsibility than the fun rebelliousness of joining the Avatar because holding in all her epic talent as a sheltered aristocrats' daughter gets boring.

Crowning Moments of Awesome: Bringing down the entire stairway outside the Earth King's palace / Figuring out how to earthbend her way out of a metal case, which was supposedly impossible
1. Every day for thirty days you post about an awesome female character. Pictures! Recs! Squee! What's not to love?

Day 1:

PEPPER POTTS
Iron Man

Whoever first said "Behind every great man is a great woman" was obviously talking about Tony Stark's long-suffering assistant. It's so refreshing to see a character like Pepper in a big action franchise who can be strong without the ability to physically kick somebody's ass and isn't just there as eye candy in skin-tight leather either. She's not just the best secretary in the universe but able to run an entire company while Tony's too busy with the funner parts of being a super hero. I love that she knows him too well/is generally too awesome to be mindlessly impressed by the whole Iron Man thing and throwing herself at him before the time that it's actually a right decision, and until then her character is not angstily consumed or defined by that tension being there. In fact, despite her claim that she doesn't have anyone else in her life either, you almost get the idea that he needs her more than she needs him. She could just get too fed up with him and run off with Happy the driver someday, after all. (Oh wait, that's in canon...)

2. I watch so few shows besides stuff that I download that it always feels a little weird when I actually take time to turn on the TV and just...see what's on...and watch it. Today I was just going through the guide to see when Sherlock is supposed to air on PBS (yeah, I'm going to watch some of it again just because it's on TV here even though I've seen it a million times, LOL) and ended up watching an episode of the Granada series on there, which I didn't know they showed. (It was "The Blue Carbuncle," which left me all in the mood for Christmas time and then I thought, Oh right...It's still October. LOL.)

Anyway, I saw their preview for Sherlock while I was watching it and noticed that they used Hans Zimmer's theme from the Ritchie movie in it. That's kind of funny. The scores do coincidentally sound very similar at times.

3. I really can't believe it myself, but I've only recently begun catching up on Doctor Who when I hadn't watched any since "Journey's End." There's surely nothing new to be said by now about the specials and I'm sure almost everyone found something to hate about them, but I loved them. "The End of Time" didn't really stand up to some of my favorite episodes ever as much as I was expecting, but I still thought it was very good. Especially when Timothy Dalton's face suddenly filled the screen and [livejournal.com profile] ninety6tears and I couldn't help but crack up laughing in surprise. (And OMG, I was never really into the Doctor/Master slashiness before but all their interaction killed me this time around. Hehe.)

I've also finally been watching Torchwood for the first time. My reasons for loving it can basically be summed up in this picture. LMAO.

I have a friend who for a while kept enthusiastically trying to force Children of Earth on me whenever I was hanging out at his house, and I had to keep telling him no matter how much better it is I just can't watch the third season of something before the rest. Ironically the reason I was insistent about not being spoiled is because I'd already heard about who dies in it, just like anyone who spends any time on LJ probably heard enough about it to be able to figure it out (people always think they're being so vague about spoilers *eyeroll*). But the only thing worse than hearing about a character dying before you get to that point is getting to that point before you've even had a chance to start caring about the character and it can have the proper effect on you.

So yeah, I do see now why people don't exactly excitedly recommend the first two seasons. I'm really not the kind of person who watches something with a critical eye spotting all the plot holes and inconsistencies, generally because that's just one thing I'm kind of slow about, lol. But there were several moments especially in season 1 that I actually was scratching my head and going Wait... because something didn't seem to totally make sense. If it doesn't get past me, then the logic must be pretty bad. Haha. But even though the Torchwood Declassified documentaries are half full of RTD congratulating himself on how ~dark~ this episode is just like last week and next week, I find the real appeal is that even in the darkest and creepiest episodes like "They Keep Killing Suzie" the show maintains sort of a tongue-in-cheek and morbidly humorous feel. I mean, the episodes do have titles like "They Keep Killing Suzie" and "Countrycide." LOL. I guess when it's not the more intelligent show it becomes by Series 3, it makes up for it for me that it at least has a sense of fun about it. And I think I'd actually be a little disappointed if the show never regained some of its stupidity following Children of Earth, so hopefully the next season will have a mix of seriousness and ridiculousness to keep everyone happy.
If you can't wait for autumn 2011, make a post with your favourite Sherlock quote.

Anderson: According to someone the murderer has the case, and we found it in the hands of our favorite psychopath.
Sherlock: I'm not a psychopath, Anderson, I'm a high-functioning sociopath. Do your research.

Sherlock: Are you all right?
John: Yes, of course.
Sherlock: You have just killed a man.
John: Yes...It's true. But he wasn't a very nice man. And frankly, a bloody awful cabbie.
Sherlock: That's true, he was a bad cabbie. You should have seen the route he took us to get here.
John: *laughing* Stop, we can't giggle, it's a crime scene.
Sherlock: You're the one who shot him, not me.
John: Keep your voice down!

John: That's the phone, the pink phone.
Lestrade: From "A Study In Pink"?
Sherlock: Obviously it's not the same phone, but it's supposed to look like — "A Study In Pink"? You read his blog?
Lestrade: Of course I read his blog, we all do. Do you really not know that the Earth goes around the sun?
I just spent a ridiculous portion of the day redoing my entire tagging system on Delicious, and this all started with me deciding it was finally time to make separate tags for each Sherlock Holmes universe now that there are three (bookverse, SH09 movieverse, and Sherlock-verse) encompassed in my bookmarks. This led to me making a tag bundle for everything Holmes, which led to other new tag bundles, and then I got started thinking I should have all my character and pairing tags at the top of my tags page while random labels like "drunk_kirk_is_so_cute" and "imprinting_is_evil" and "holmes/violin=otp" would all be separated from them.

Hours later I'm still retagging shit. But now they're so beautiful and organized! XD Until I change my mind about how stuff should be arranged again. I'm fine leaving my purse or important documents or entire car a mess half the time, but when it comes to things like my bookmarks and LJ tags and items on my Wishpot I get obsessive about having everything neat and orderly and just so. Tell me I'm not the only one, LOL.

Alrighty, couple memes...

1. Comment with “SHOWTIME!” and I will give you five actors and five actresses. Then post in your journal-of-choice what your favorite film of theirs is and why.

[livejournal.com profile] ninety6tears gave me...

KATE WINSLET. Quills, with Finding Neverland a close second. There is no need to explain this one, FOOLS.
KEIRA KNIGHTLEY. I'm going to arbitrarily say Atonement because it also has The Cumberbatch in it. "Smashing slacks" OMG his character is so creepy, lol.
MERYL STREEP. Angels In America because this is me we're talking about.
ZIYI ZHANG. Crouching Tiger is in my top ten movies. Typical Ang Lee perfection.
NICOLE KIDMAN. Moulin Rouge. Surprisingly one of my three favorite movies considering I usually hate musicals. Haters gonna hate, you either dig it or really can't stand it.
JOHNNY DEPP. I still totally love Sleepy Hollow for the pure fun.
JOAQUIN PHOENIX. Walk the Line. Thank God this was one of the biopics to start the way-past-Ghandi age of non-boring biopics.
BRUCE WILLIS. The Fifth Element. "Negative, I am a meat popsicle." Everybody loves The Fifth Element.
ALAN RICKMAN. Sweeney Todd because it's not a very conventional musical and, you know, just surprisingly amazing in general given it's about a homicidal barber.
AL PACINO. Dick Tracy because I didn't want to say AiA again and...I really should see more of his movies.

[livejournal.com profile] eumelkeks inquires...

1. Why do you like Jacob?
When his character isn't being randomly written as an ass because of SMeyer's need to teach young girls to feel threatened by anything resembling normal sexuality, he's a refreshingly not-too-intense, funny, reasonably normal, and unpretentious character in the sea of bullshit Shakespeare quoting that is that whole series. (I tried really hard to answer that without saying anything that's specifically in comparison to Edward because I do actually like Edward usually. He's just excruciatingly painful to observe through Bella's swooning and worshipping POV, lol.)
2. What keeps you sane when shit hits the fan?
Tea. Music. And I guess my general ability to not let stuff get to me too much and always know it's not the end of the world. When something bad's happened people sometimes comment on me acting weirdly mild about it as if I don't care, but I guess I just have a way of internalizing things. Probably wouldn't be the case if it were ever a OMG!-life-and-death situation, though.
3. Your feel-good film?
Love Actually.
4. What do you love the most about writing fanfiction?
Because I write mostly short fic for a large variety of different kinds of fandoms, I like switching up the kind of thing I'm doing all the time. I can dabble in an Asian-inspired action fantasy universe, then Victorian England, then try something in modern day that's a little dark and creepy with slash, then some het in a futuristic setting. I guess that's why I don't get bored with fanfic as easily as I do with my much longer original stuff, LOL.
5. Your thoughts on shipping drama?
It's so much more fun when everyone can calm the fuck down and get along. If we have to argue I'd at least like to know it's about something important like whether or not writing certain things is racist or something like that, even though those kind of arguments always have the potential to piss me off a lot more.
1. From [livejournal.com profile] mclachlan...

Bold any reasons that apply to you, strike out any that don't (if you feel like it), and add three (or so) reasons of your own to the bottom.

REASONS I WRITE FANFIC

1. To explore themes that I don't get to see in mass media using characters I love.
2. Because it's fun.
3. Because mass media does a crappy job of representing my race, gender and sexual orientation.
4. Because I can get more people aboard my ship writing a story than a manifesto.
5. Because TV science-fiction doesn't explore its science-fiction premises in enough depth.
6. Because it's a gift I can give a stranger and know they will enjoy it.
7. Because it makes my brain hurt, but in a good way.
8. The lack of attention a lot of female/minor characters get.
9. Fandom is a wonderful thing, and I want to be a part of that.
10. Writing is an important creative outlet for me
11. I have been plagued by what-ifs and untold stories all my life
12. I love to experiment

+13. To branch out by trying genres I don't usually write and which sometimes call for the use of different styles and conventions.
+14. To examine and analyze characters and themes of the canon in a way that can feel more practical and be more fun than just writing meta about them.
+15. To fill the void when the canon may be fine the way it is but still leaves me wanting more.

2. Is it just my imagination, or does it seem like every time you see someone posting in a comm describing a fanfic they read once and are trying to find again, it always sounds like a really terrible fic? Whenever I see a post with someone asking for help with something like that, it always grabs my full attention because I know it's usually going to be entertaining. Like "This story had Sirius coming back from the dead and when he finds out Remus married Tonks he puts a curse on her without knowing she's pregnant, then Remus finds out he almost killed their baby and he's furious so Sirius tries to kill himself. And I remember by the end Sirius and Remus are raising Teddy together after Tonks died in the battle. Sound familiar to anyone? Oh and I think the title was from a Muse song." LOL.

9) "If people only spoke when they had something to say, the human race would soon lose the power of speech."
10) "Scruffy. Morbid. A sentimental replica of a planet long since vanished. No style at all!"
11) "You were always a problem for me. When Mom brought you home from the hospital, I tried to strangle you in your crib. I guess all kids try to do that."
12) "I hate you so much that I would destroy myself to take you down with me."
13) "What precisely is Michael's crime?" "He's my younger brother." Finding Neverland guessed by [livejournal.com profile] _thirty2flavors
14) "He'd probably enjoy that. Killed by a naked blonde who doesn't wear underwear to the strains of a Jerry Goldsmith score. Come to think of it, I'd sort of dig that myself."
15) "I could never be a woman, 'cause I'd just stay home and play with my breasts all day."

I'll let you guys guess away at those while I watch a certain movie I bought today...bet you'll never guess what...

Meanwhile, I'm yet to purchase Season 3 of Mad Men and this is sad. Need to marathon the shit out of that.

3 memes...

Mar. 11th, 2010 08:07 pm
1. TELL ME STUFF TO TAKE PICTURES OF AND I WILL POST THEM TO SHOW YOU. I've seen memes like this going around a lot but never had a camera with which to participate, but now my mama has a new digital camera that I would like to play with. So you know how this works. My DVDs, my pets, whatever.

2. And since I can never see this one going around without doing it again: Post a sentence (or two or a paragraph) from as many of your WIPs as you want, with no explanation attached.

3. Comment and I'll give you three of your fandoms, then copy and paste the questions onto your journal and fill it out.

[livejournal.com profile] ninety6tears gave me Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, and Skins.

If you see this, post a poem in your own LJ.

somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond
E. E. Cummings

somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond
any experience, your eyes have their silence:
in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me,
or which i cannot touch because they are too near

your slightest look easily will unclose me
though i have closed myself as fingers,
you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens
(touching skilfully,mysteriously)her first rose

or if your wish be to close me, i and
my life will shut very beautifully ,suddenly,
as when the heart of this flower imagines
the snow carefully everywhere descending;

nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals
the power of your intense fragility:whose texture
compels me with the color of its countries,
rendering death and forever with each breathing

(i do not know what it is about you that closes
and opens;only something in me understands
the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses)
nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands

Hm.

Your result for The Fan Fiction Personality Test...

The Mindgamer

Everything is possible, nothing is ever really over.

Fanfiction is a creative outlet for you. You don't intentionally write it, it just happens. You find inspiration in several fandoms, but are not obsessed with only one.

You like to explore "what if" situations. What if this character had never made this very choice? What if this event had taken place sooner, never, elsewhere? What if these people had never met?

You are likely to write Alternative Universes, fan seasons or sequels and just follow your (sometimes pretty strange) plot bunnies.

The end-of-year fic writing meme everybody's doing...

The 2009 list:
- "Aerilon Girls Are Easy" (Battlestar Galactica; Kara/Lee)
- "Where Soul Meets Body" (Battlestar Galactica; Kara/Lee)
- "Strength of the Mind" (Star Trek XI; Spock/Kirk/Uhura)
- "Boys Will Be Boys" (Twilight; Jacob/Bella)
- "The Persistence of Gravity" (Twilight; Sam/Leah)
- 4 drabbles for the Twilight uncanon pairings meme:
"The Garage" (Jacob/Quil/Embry)
"The Importance of Being Edward" (Carlisle/Edward)
"Red Wedding" (Carlisle/Rosalie)
"Fair Arrangement" (Paul/Angela/Jacob)
- The final chapter of "What Music They Make" (Twilight; Jacob/Bella, Edward/Bella)
- "The Golden Phase of Dying Leaves" (Twilight; Jacob/Bella)

My favorite story this year (of my own):
If I count "What Music They Make" as part of this year since I finally finished it, that one, since it's hard not to have a special attachment to something I put an assload of work into over a period of more than a couple years. Otherwise I really like "Aerilon Girls Are Easy."

My best story this year:
Possibly "The Persistence of Gravity." It's totally got some big flaws, but it grew into so much more than I ever thought it was going to be when I started writing it about a year and a half ago. The whole meaning of the title even ended up being more complicated and multi-layered than I consciously planned. In a lot of ways it seems more like an original story than any other fic I've ever done since it involved developing two background characters much more than they're ever fleshed out in the series, and if I may say so myself I think I did a surprisingly decent job making them seem like very real people in a real relationship, which meant I got unexpectedly really invested in them and felt kind of like stabbing myself by the time I got to the tragedy, LOL.

Leave me a comment saying "Resistance is Futile."
• I'll respond by asking you five questions so I can satisfy my curiosity.
• Update your journal with the answers to the questions.
• Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions.

My questions from [livejournal.com profile] ninety6tears...

1. Your novel that you haven't written yet is getting made into a movie. Who directs it, who scores the music, who plays any of the characters, etc.

2. What is your favorite music video?

3. If you could only write fic for one fandom for the rest of your life (god forbid), which one would it be?

Though I seem to have the most fun writing for Twilight for some reason despite my low respect for the canon material, I'll say Harry Potter since I can actually imagine people still reading HP fanfic twenty years from now, and that I'll also still like it. I mean shit, it's not like I think I'll look back and regret that Twilight was part of my life but I'm not sure I see myself not being pretty over it after enough time.

4. Favorite quote by a famous person?

"As for me, all I know is that I know nothing."
Socrates

5. Marlon Brando, James Dean, or Gregory Peck? (Hotness, not talent.)

That's easy, BRANDO. In Streetcar he was like the embodiment of all things indecently hot. Definitely wouldn't have thrown any of them out of bed in a million years, though.

+ As a much belated note, thanks so much [livejournal.com profile] nikki6 and [livejournal.com profile] lemomina for the v-gifts. Happy holidays, bbs. :)

Two ships you don't like :

14. Spock/Uhura...in fandom (STXI)

- Why do you dislike #14 so much?
I liked the way the relationship is in the movie and I see the logic of it (lol) because of their similarities, but as far as reading about them in fic or something, imagining what they would be like together any regular day bores me to death. All the fic I've tried reading that attempts to make them dynamically passionate and hot together just struck me as hilariously OOC. Plus the huge amount of shippers it has now has started to give it exaggerated importance. There were like two scenes of the whole movie involving the relationship, is it possible there's something else we could be more invested in as far as what will happen in the sequel? It's gotten so nauseatingly fangirly.

- Who is someone you know that ships #9?
I'm not sure. Hey guys, who else ships George and Christopher?

I have so many recs and other little things I've been meaning to post but can't seem to motivate myself to go ahead and do it. And I also owe you guys fic commentaries for the stories that won in my poll a while ago. The obvious solution is to give myself more little things to do, so...

Ask me my fannish top five anything and I will answer them all in a new post.

I may change it to Top Ten if I feel like it because I just like making lists of things, LOL.

If anyone needs a refresher, my biggest fandoms these days are Battlestar Galactica, Harry Potter, Star Trek, Mad Men, Doctor Who, Avatar: The Last Airbender, DC Universe, Twilight, and Heroes.
The WIP meme: post a single sentence from each WIP you have (or as many as you want to pick). No context, no explanations.

1. "You're only getting warm from sitting so close to that green-blooded space heater."
2. She decides to extend the plotline, go to college, live with roommates, go to movies, end up always having to clean up after her roommates, turn in essays with coffee stains on them, struggle.
3. It was over in fifteen seconds, and then Jim was silently walking out with quite a lot of eyes following him, leaving him groaning and bleeding from his nose on the floor.
4. "Exhibit A: my boyfriend can turn into a giant wolf."
5. After she tells Peter that she is naming him Noah, it does not entirely escape her notice that he looks vaguely uncomfortable for a moment.
6. Zak hadn't had that much to drink, had he?
7. His voice stiff and unsure, he just said, "Right...well...stay in good health, Edward.”
8. "You are blood to me."
9. "It makes me feel better to know that you'll be around for Katara if anything should ever happen to me."
10. Lee wonders if she's a real blonde.
11. "Who's that girl who kept picking all the lousy music?" Quil asked.
12. "Do I look like a goddamn Romulan to you?"
• Post ten of any pictures currently on your hard drive that you think are self-expressive.
• NO CAPTIONS!!! It must be like we're speaking with images and we have to interpret your visual language just like we have to interpret your words.
• They must ALREADY be on your hard drive - no googling or flickr! They have to have been saved to your folders sometime in the past. They must be something you've saved there because it resonated with you for some reason.
• You do NOT have to answer any questions about any of your pictures if you don't want to. You can make them as mysterious as you like. Or you can explain them away as much as you like.

Oooh ~self expressive~ okay...
