I need to do one of these memes to hopefully motivate my ass to take a better look at some of this stuff and finish it. And it's kind of hilarious how much BSG stuff I've started now considering I once thought I'd never end up writing BSG fic and still think I'm worse at writing for it than for any other fandoms I sometimes play with. LOL.
THE RANDOM WIP MEME!
When you see this, post an excerpt from as many random works-in-progress as you can find lying around. Who knows? Maybe inspiration will burst forth and do something, um, inspiration-y.
Half-awake in the morning, she dreams that she can hear a fly buzzing around in the bunk, opens her eyes to light and complete silence.
She remembers when she told Lee where she got the Pyramid ball he found her playing with, how she thought she saw him bring it to his face for a second to try smell the scent of home. She can’t remember what Caprica smelled like anymore. Or the sound of breeze, bugs flying, sleet tapping against windows in the harsh cold in the winter, everything pleasant about it and everything she never thought she could miss. These things still return to her in dreams sometimes but slip right back away after sleep.
Maybe in death, the final endless sleep, they will all finally go back home. Maybe soon.
Battlestar Galactica: "Aurora's Wings" (post-4.0 AU; Kara/Lee, Kara/Sam, Leoben, Adama, Kasey)
He can only believe in the kind of God that doesn't watch over all of his children like one examines a board of chess pieces and contemplates ways to fuck with them or grant little favors like a boss giving promotions but only really ends up making a move rarely. He doesn't want to believe in miracles or destined true love or plagues as punishment. He would like to think that God knowing the future isn't the same thing as him having a detailed plan that he wills into being carried out like a writer penning all of his characters' actions and words. Because if everyone is not free to choose what they do, be grateful for the his gift of life or throw it back in his face, kill humans to live or hunt animals instead, love one person or another, then he isn't much of a god anyway. A good father is one whose children become able to survive without him.
He pictures their lives in alternate parallel universes where other choices were made at certain points, altering the future. There is another Bella Swan somewhere that still has her Edward. There is another Jacob Black somewhere who always had a Bella, never had to fight for her because there was never another guy to begin with, and never became a werewolf. Somewhere Edward Cullen has been dead since 1916 because a vampire never chose to make him his son. Any of these things could have actually happened. He has to believe all of these worlds are real in their own way, within the attainable realm of possibility, because that means his life has options. For all he knows he is in one of them now.
Twilight: "Metafiction" (AU; Jacob, Bella, Edward, Rosalie, Carlisle)
It amused Kara a little how obvious it was that Lee was really uncomfortable here. While Carolanne and Zak were engaged in a conversation, he left them to instead go talk to Kara in the guest room as took some of her things out of the small bag she packed.
"At least we didn't find her with a glass already in her hand," he muttered, sitting on the bed.
She smiled at him in a sympathetic "Don't be like that" way.
"What?" he asked innocently, throwing his arms up for a moment. "Don't tell me you're actually looking forward to these two days."
"Frak no," she said with a short laugh. "But you know, it's important she meets me some time. And I think Zak needs the support more than he'll admit."
Lee laughed a little bitterly. "No kidding. I don't know what the hell else he expects when we come here, but he always lets himself get so disappointed..."
"Okay, okay, let's not get started. You could try to be a little bit as optimistic as him."
Glancing at the perfectly dusted mirror with an elegant gold frame on the wall, she noticed how much her shirt was sticking to her with sweat. Lee smirked after she made a face and then she pointed to her bag on the bed, saying, "Give me another shirt out of there."
He unzipped the bag, looked inside and grabbed the first thing he saw which looked like a rolled-up shirt.
"No, that's not—" Kara started to stop him right before something rolled up in the cloth fell out. Lee looked down in surprise at the two goddess figures that landed on the wooden floor with hard clangs.
BSG: "Blood Is Not Thick Enough" (pre-series; Kara, Lee, Zak)
He doesn’t know what to do. Leah will never understand. He doesn’t really understand. And worst of all, she doesn’t. She looks at him in complete shock like he disgusts her, like it amazes her that her no-fool cousin trusts and loves this man so much, and says, “You don’t even know me. You don’t know anything about me.”
He cannot possibly explain how that has nothing to do with it. To him, Emily is not her favorite color or whether or not she believes in the afterlife or what she likes to do when she has nothing to do or what words she tends to use a lot in conversation. Emily is not a person. She is a life. She is a vast country. She holds the entire ocean of understanding in her arms. Her voice permits time. The curves and contours and angles of her body are shapes molded to support existence, the planes and valleys and mountains of the earth he walks on.
She is not beautiful, but beauty itself. Everything from now on will only ever be beautiful in the way its proportions can be likened to her. Then all the sudden, as if it completes this entire otherworldly change of his life, he has snapped out from the inside of himself and hurt the only thing in the universe he would have thought could never be made less perfect. She will have horrible scars forever on one side of her body. The dark and light side of the moon. Of course this would happen because love is not just about the good. Now everything can only be truly ugly in the ways it looks like her, too.
Twilight: "The Persistence of Gravity" (Sam/Leah)
When Samuel Anders was young, he wanted to be a famous and immortalized guitar player who played for thousands on stages. He wanted his songs to resonate through time and space, remain as part of the permanent material of the universe. Instead he ended up just playing his songs for his loved ones, never even noticing the time at which that became enough.
Ten thousand years later a melody he once played, now so old even he doesn't remember it, comes scorching back into sound from the dark depths of some surrounding transcendent knowledge, telling of a life from long ago. Some part of that time lives on. So will part of this one.
BSG: "The Last Piano In the Universe" (multi-era gen; various characters)
Late one night, Lee comes into the rec room to find it empty except for Kara, sitting with her head collapsed into her arms and one hand still loosely gripped around a knocked-over shot glass on the table. Rolling his eyes at the sight, he passes her to sit down at another table, unbuttoning the top of his uniform, and at the sound of someone coming in she stirs and slowly sits up.
"Shit..." She rubs her forehead a moment and looks at him. "What time is it?"
Lee takes his time answering, not feeling like dealing with her if acknowledging her presence leads to anything right now, but finally says, "Almost oh-one-hundred, I think."
Then she cocks an eyebrow, looking him over and easily noticing he's annoyed about something. Here we go, he thinks darkly.
"What the hell happened to you?" she asks.
He shakes his head. "Dinner with Tigh and the missus," he answers simply.
She immediately laughs. "Oh gods," she says, actually sounding a little sympathetic. "How was that?"
"Well, let's see...She and the Colonel showed up already a little drunk. Then she managed to insensitively bring up my dead brother, insult the president, and put her foot in my crotch all inside of an hour."
She bursts out laughing harder, leaning back in her chair and throwing her head back. "Oh, you're kidding!"
"I think I'm going to have a bruise where she pinched my ass on the way out," he adds, setting her off even more and actually starting to smile a little himself.
"Oh frak," Kara says breathlessly through her laughing, "I would have paid to see the look on your face!"
Now they're both laughing. Kara starts pouring drinks into two shot glasses.
"Here," she gets out through her now small, persisting giggles. "You deserve it for enduring that."
He stares incredulously at her table. "You want to have a drink with me?"
"Definitely not, Apollo. But unfortunately there's nobody else here."
BSG: "We're Not Friends" (AU; Lee/Kara) (collaboration w/
ninety6tears)
When she comes around the corner into Jacob's kitchen later that day, he freezes when he sees her in surprise, and then releases his breath in a short laugh. "Oh my God..."
Her hair is cut off past her jaw and now has straight, even bangs over her forehead.
"It was Emily's idea," she says, awkwardly running her fingers through it in the back. "To make me less recognizable."
"Wow..." Jacob comes forward and looks around at her to see it from different angles, seeming to be grinning uncontrollably.
"Don't laugh," she says with a frown.
"Why would I laugh?" he asks, running his fingers down the length of her hair and then resting them on her pale neck, which now somehow looks more elongated. "It's cute as hell."
Her face lights up with surprise. "Really?"
He shakes his head, bends over and kisses her neck. "You're silly."
As if it is a reflex now, her hands raise to his neck as he does this. She giggles and says, "Now you have more hair than me," grabbing onto some of his.
He laughs, standing up straight again. "Yeah. It's lucky that picture of me they used for those goddamn flyers is from when my hair was still pretty short."
Bella shakes her head, smirking. "This is going to feel like being wanted criminals on the run."
He laughs. "I know. It's great."
Twilight: "Rising Back To Life" (AU; Jacob/Bella/Edward)
Lee started talking very slowly and carefully, never looking directly at her. "You can meet someone and know right from the beginning that they're not for you. That it can never be. But sometimes...it doesn't stop you from feeling something anyway. And that doesn't make you a bad person. We can't all be completely in control all the time."
"You can," she said a little mockingly. "That's who you are."
"That's just what you think."
"Well, all I know is you've never done anything to surprise me in all the time I've known you."
BSG: "Aerilon Girls Are Easy" (AU; Kara/Lee)
It can be so tedious and exhausting interacting with others so much younger than him. Things that were common knowledge to his people, a long long time ago, have to be explained to them, over and over.
But somehow, she has always been different. The very fast and eager learner who will never be satisfied until she knows all that he knows. He takes comfort in the fact that this is impossible, that every day there will always be something new for them to experience together, making it feel to him almost like he's discovering it for the first time.
So he can smile obligingly when, on a planet called Ppolmo where long white grass grows, she turns to face him where they are laying side-by-side on it and says, "Explain it to me again. How are the days here only ten minutes long?"
