She asks to hear more of his stories. Three years of his stories and he’s nowhere near their end. Today she hears about a planet where the custom is to change your identity once a year. Move to a new place, take a new name and a new job, find a new love. She comments that it sounds like his life. He is quiet, and she is sorry.

I've been a casual DW watcher for a while. It's always on while I'm waiting to watch BSG, which should explain enough, and I also have a friend who likes to convince me to watch old episodes with him a lot. But just recently I started getting more excited about the current season and watching a lot more episodes I'd never seen. So of course, this is what happens. I'm so glad I somehow remembered that [livejournal.com profile] madlori, who I already know as one of the best fic writers I've ever found because of her Brokeback Mountain stories, wrote some DW fic a long time ago, because I know some good will come from anything she touches.

Even if it's fic with Rose and the Doctor married. This seems like an idea that would be hard to make believable or would just be made into a whole lot of fluff, but Lori makes their married life not just possible to accept but achingly bittersweet. Because even imagined as a lifelong commitment, there's nothing fluffy and easy about this kind of relationship, of course, and the way this story recognizes the ultimate tragedy of it is brilliant. I also love how she shows that just because they are husband and wife their relationship still can't be described with ordinary roles like that and there are really no words for what they mean to each other. Because naturally, settling down for these two never actually means settling down.
