For a while I've been thinking about doing a multi-disc Harry Potter mix picking a few characters and doing a selection of songs they would have on their iPods according to my "personal canon"...you know, if a lot of Wizards and Witches actually had mp3 players. But ever since I've gotten into Twilight it has seemed like a much funner mix idea for a series with so many characters who have actually been around for almost the entire history of recorded music and could justifiably be thought to listen to anything. Plus the books/lexicon tell us a little about what some characters like so a lot of my choices are totally canon.
The title of this mix comes from how Stephenie Meyer has said "Edward likes a wide range of music (he has a lot of time on his hands for listening)." In addition to two of my favorite vampires I did playlists for Bella and Jacob, who may not be immortals who never sleep but do live in the Forks area, which gives you not much to do and plenty of spare time for just sitting around with some headphones on.
I wasn't deliberately trying to find songs with lyrics that fit the characters at all, but I did find some songs by artists I wanted to use anyway that were just too perfect not to choose, as I think you'll see. :)
( disc 1 )
iEdward
music for driving at night.
This mix is the most varied and the most supported by canon, although with Edward I think I could have taken even more liberty with deciding what music he would like than I did. He claims to prefer 50's music to 60's and 70's, yet none of the genres of music Steph has said he likes really encompass "oldies" as he's listening to in that scene, and she says he listens to punk rock, which started and was at its prime in the mid-70's. So basically, he's all over the place and I could have justified using just about anything, and at one point I had some non-jazz 50's music on his playlist. But I decided to keep this mix with a more cohesive focus.

iBella
music for relaxing outside with a book.
There are a few random things we know from canon Bella likes listening to (Chopin, Debussy, the CD she got from Phil which Steph has identified as Linkin Park). She seems to me like someone who is never really in the know as far as what's going on in popular music and doesn't even listen to music every day but could like a lot of different things if she actually tried them. So for her mix more than anyone's, I ended up picking songs with more of a mood that I think seems to fit her than with a specific genre.

iJacob
music to rock your face off.
There is absolutely no evidence in the books of what kind of music Jacob would listen to, but the idea of what I think he would like came kind of naturally to me when I considered how he and Edward are complete opposites in basically all ways. Therefore, his favorite music is everything not classy. Far from art-snobby and sophisticated, with ballsy guitar solos and whatnot.
I think this one's my favorite, perhaps not surprisingly. XD

iAlice
music for chilling at a party.
The choices for Alice's disc are also just about purely speculative. We have the scene in her car in Eclipse when she is blasting something with a loud female singer (why hasn't anyone asked Steph who that's supposed to be??), and from that you get the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the Breeders. Everything else is just drawn from my own idea of her personality.

Date: 2007-12-07 01:21 am (UTC)I'll probably snag all of them -- but definitely Edward's. Thank you!
ETA: I had to come back and give you MAJOR props for putting this together. It's so refreshing from many of the other fanmixes I've seen and it's WONDERFUL.
