I've been searching desperately for some good stories to rec that aren't MWPP-era or Lupin/Tonks because that's not everybody's cuppa. I was searching for some deep, intelligent Snape fics and had nearly given up when I just kept finding stories with summaries like "Snape falls in love with a wall." But then I stumbled across this wonderful collection of short stories about Snape at The Sugar Quill.
"Dreamscapes" is a series of four vignettes inspired by poetry by T. S. Eliot and other literary works. All of these clever short snippets out of the life of Severus Snape are about his hidden, unsuperficial self and his inner conflicts. We see him in ways we never see him through Harry's eyes in the books (which is exactly what fanfic is for!). It doesn't really matter if the author has portrayed Snape as being a little too easy to feel sorry for and almost a pleasant kind of guy, because it is written so well I accept it as being justifiable and reasonable.

Title: Dreamscapes
Author: Sweeney Agonistes
Characters: Snape, Dumbledore
Rating: G
Summary: Four vignettes about Snape: a walk through Knockturn Alley, an orphaned young girl, a mystery in the Forbidden Forest, and a bit of a mid-life crisis concerning his worth as a teacher.
