Fanfic Rec: "Thestrals" (Harry Potter)
Aug. 12th, 2007 04:07 amThis brilliant and haunting little one-shot actually gave me goosebumps in some parts because when you read it knowing what is coming, it's really quite creepy.
The fic describes how Lily and James are spending their night on Halloween in 1981. Lily has a very bad feeling that they're not safe, to the point that she's being a little superstitious and feeling especially protective of Harry. James, of course, thinks she's being perfectly irrational, and meanwhile keeps singing a rather disturbing Wizard nursery rhyme to Harry even though she keeps asking him to cut it out.
Considering this was written before the release of Deathly Hallows, the nursery rhyme that the author made up seems remarkably consistent with what we've now found out about Wizard culture and tradition. The Tale of the Three Brothers reminded me of a lot of real fairy tales that are kind of dark and gruesome for something that's told to children (especially the original Grimm brothers versions), so it seems believable that little Witch and Wizard children would skip around singing a song about Thestrals that actually has quite sinister words.
