Writer's WIP meme
Aug. 11th, 2007 03:03 amWhen you see this, post a little weensy excerpt from as many random works-in-progress as you can find lying around. Who knows? Maybe inspiration will burst forth and do something, um, inspiration-y.
Oooh, fun. :)
"You're attempting to bribe an officer of the law. That's a serious beef if I wanted to stick it."
"No," Taylor said. "No bribe. I've got you figured now, Detective, and I know you won't bite for that. I'm just asking now."
"You're asking me to neglect to report information that could be an important lead. That's withholding evidence. Anyone sniffs that and they could send me packing with no questions asked. Give me one reason I should stick my neck out like that for you and your girlfriends."
"Because it's quite possible you need help from someone involved in my boss's racket to crack this thing, but we're only willing to cooperate if you give us a safety jacket. And because this isn't just any case to you; it's more personal with you. You know it's got to be you who's going to find the son of a bitch who capped that kid because nobody else is going to care to go digging deep enough to solve some homocide."
"Why should I give a fuck if the kid was a swish?" Brian asked. "I didn't know him. He's just another number lying on a slab."
Taylor grinned knowingly, making him feel uncomfortable. "You know, I was only making small talk when I asked about your medal. I already knew how you got it. I know how your partner got shot. I know it was a while after that you got divorced. I know your son Gus is three years old now. We've done our research, Bird, and I know everything about you."
- "Out of Nowhere", a crime story set in Los Angeles in 1957 (Queer as Folk - Brian/Justin - AR)
"You're not just any woman to him," Theo presumed, as if he knew it for a fact. "But he don't like it to show. What happened? You didn't love him?"
Elizabeth realized a little slowly that he was looking over toward the helm at Jack, and she just felt frozen for a moment. Then she looked back at Theo.
"No. Not that Jack you see over there. Not Captain Jack Sparrow, the legend. But a couple times I did meet the real Jack. I would guess that you've met him, too."
Theo smiled understandingly, and nodded.
She nodded, too. "Some day, maybe I'll get to see him again. But loving one man who is hardly ever around is quite enough for me."
Theo glanced over at Jack again, still smiling. "Well. At least you an' me know he's in there somewhere."
- "The Voyage To Fiddler's Green" (Pirates of the Caribbean - Elizabeth/Jack)
Stephan turned and seemed to freeze up a moment when he saw Brian. "Well, fuck me. You're Brian?"
He grinned. "How's it going?"
Stephan looked at Justin with wide eyes. "Shit, dude."
"Uncle Goddamn," Luke sighed, pulling him back around to sit back down in his seat like he was a child. "You want to quit ogling him?"
"Sorry, it's just..." Steph glanced back at him in the rearview mirror. "You really don't...look thirty-six," he barely managed to finish before starting to giggle a little.
"Thanks," Brian said with a smirk.
"Steph!" Luke said seriously. "Eleanor fuckin' Rigby, shithead."
Steph looked at him in shock. "Oh, come on, I don't want to-"
Justin started to crack up laughing, hunching over and gripping his stomach, and then Luke started laughing, too.
"What the fuck?" Brian asked.
Justin motioned for him to lean over and he started to whisper something in his ear, but Steph saw them and said, "Oh, no, Justin! You can't tell him what our code word means!"
"Eleanor Rigby is a code word?" Brian said, smiling in amusement. "For what?"
- "Remember This", a sequel to "Precious" (Queer as Folk - Brian/Justin, OC/OC)
Brian looked at Lindsay and didn't see any of himself in her. She had favorite songs. She got excited when she heard a song she liked playing. She had many friends who she loved. She told her friends she loved them. She was a generally happy person. When she felt happy, it was easy to tell.
Besides both happening to be gay, they really didn't have anything in common. But Brian couldn't say he would want to be friends with someone like himself anyway.
- "Children's Play" (Queer as Folk - Brian/Lindsay gen, Michael)
"Lita's a rolling stone," Luce said. "She's like a stray cat that shows up on your porch and lets you take her in for a while. And then all of the sudden, just when you start to like her even though you know she's only there for the milk, she runs off and never comes back. Like Audrey."
"Audrey?"
He smirked, seeming to innerly laugh at himself for saying that. "When Dom moved into the room with me we bought those cats together. There was Toulouse and Satie, plus a girl cat we named Audrey. She was a really pretty Birman and a mean little bitch. The day I came home and found Dominic had left me, Audrey was missing, too. I don't know if he took her with him or just accidenally let her out while he was moving his shit out of the pad and didn't even care enough to go catch her. For all I know she's a furry pancake on the road this very moment." With a pathetic look on his face, he lifted his drink up. He said, "God love you, Audrey, wherever you are," and drank to that, downing it.
- Never Fade (Original)
Lupin paused, wondering if he'd heard right. "You went to college?"
She laughed. "Yeah. Believe it or not, I was originally going to go into Muggle relations like both of my parents. The only extra education required to work at the Department of Muggle Secrecy is a year of study at a Muggle university working part-time at a non-magical job. I made it through half that second semester and then quit."
"Where did you go?"
"New York University."
"America?"
"Yeah. I was supposed to try to completely blend in with the culture and pretend I was from there, but I was hopeless at trying to hide my accent. And God, it was lousy not being able to change my hair. I'll never do green again." At Remus's expression of obvious confusion, she explained, "I'm a Metamorphmagus."
"Ah."
"Yeah, not to mention how difficult it was being a waitress without being able to do magic. I must have broken a hundred plates because I couldn't levitate anything. You'll learn real fast, I'm dreadful clumsy. The actual school part was fun, though. I pretended I was majoring in English to be a music journalist. I even wrote a review after I went to see the Pixies that was actually published in the school's paper."
"Sorry...the Pixies?" he asked, looking slightly confused.
"Oh, not real pixies. it's a - you know - Muggle rock band."
"I see."
"Sorry, I talk an awful lot, don't I? I must be scaring you to death already."
He smiled and shook his head. "Not at all."
- "Fortress" (Harry Potter - Remus/Tonks)
"Come on. You're not such a bad guy. You should admit it sometimes."
"Where the fuck do you get that idea?"
"Well, look. You're paying for my education, without any kind of selfish motive, regardless of what it might look like to my idiotic boyfriend. And now letting me crash at your place, without any selfish motive or expectation to get anything out of it. Except maybe not getting shit from Deb if she found out you wouldn't."
Brian stared at him, like that comment had surprised him or brought some sudden thought into his head. Not smiling, he said in a low voice, "I wouldn't start thinking I'm such a good guy just yet."
- "Some Verses" (Queer as Folk - Brian/Justin - AU)
It was a very hot day in the middle of the summer. Narcissa and Bellatrix were wearing their corsets too tight and leaving their long hair down in the suffocating heat so intense that anything touching the skin was a vexing and unbearable offense. Only Andromeda had her hair tied back away from her neck with a dirty ribbon that had fallen out earlier that day when she was out riding.
They were like three different elements brought together into the same place, the three sisters lounging in the dim parlor in silence. Bella was assailingly beautiful, having inherited her father’s intense stare, ink-black hair, and severe angles. It was unusual that she was staying quiet now; usually she was the one who spoke the most and the loudest, in a proud and powerful voice. The oldest sister, she was the dominant one, a young woman of such fierce passion she was like a fire that can’t be put out.
Then Narcissa, the youngest, her skin as pale and herself as delicate as flakes of snow. She had thin blond hair that seemed to weightlessly billow behind her back as she walked like a winter mist rather than something tangible, and she herself looked almost like something that would dissolve when touched rather than feel solid. Her eyes of the lightest blue were glassy and cold like ice, and when she spoke it was in a soft and indifferent voice, never with any fluctuation, like a child annoyingly keying the highest note on a piano over and over again.
And then there was Andromeda in between them, neither soft or completely solid, whose eyes were such a dark brown they seemed to sink into unfathomable depths. Boys at school who were too intimidated by Bellatrix thought her the most beautiful of the Black sisters; while Bella’s beauty was of a strong, pointed jaw and heavy lashes narrowing the look of her eyes, Andromeda’s features were of the kind of beauty that appealed more to the touch, with her smooth curls of brown hair and many curves for hands to travel over without bumping over jutting bones. Andromeda certainly looked like something that would be soft to hold, but inside of her there was something very hard.
- "The Gentle Flow of Time" (Harry Potter - Ted/Andromeda)
Michael never could decide if Brian really changed after he got to know him or if Michael just hadn't been looking past some deceptive exterior before. Perhaps it was a little bit of both. Brian seemed to be suddenly thriving and flourishing like a plant finally put into the sun. The first time Michael heard him laugh, really laugh, with a big smile, it was so surreal, but like they were meeting for the first time.
His entire world was changing and being turned upside-down. He spent every hour he could with Brian. Brian was there in half of his classes. Brian was there every evening. When he sometimes slept over, he was there when he woke up in the morning. And Brian was often there in his dreams. Brian was everything he saw. Brian was God.
- "Always Lois Lane" (Queer as Folk - Brian/Michael gen, Debbie, Vic)
- He handed Listelle the key and went right back to his work. Instead of leaving, she kept looking at the chain around his neck.
"What is that medallion you're always wearing?"
"I don't know," he said. "Something that belonged to my mother. She wanted me to have it."
"It's beautiful. Strange....It looks more like something one of my people would own...She must have loved you a lot."
"What kind of mother doesn't love her child?"
"Well, you don't sound like you have much conviction about that."
"If she cared so much, then where is she?"
"You shouldn't say things like that. She could be dead."
The look on Abriel's face told her this possibility had certainly crossed his mind many times.
"Has Soro really told you nothing about her?" she asked.
"Only that I am probably happier not knowing anything. It's almost like he knew there was something...bad about her."
"But something in your heart tells you that's not true," she assumed. "Otherwise you wouldn't wear that pendant."
He said nothing for a while. "Do you need anything else?" he then asked coldly.

Re: HURRY THE F UP
Date: 2007-08-12 12:10 am (UTC)I think you really are going to kill me if I never actually write RT and it makes me kind of scared. O.O

Re: HURRY THE F UP
Date: 2007-08-12 12:31 am (UTC)As if I'm ever going to feel ready to write that thing.Anyway, I think it's funny that whenever I start telling you about my bunnies and get to being like "Wait, I shouldn't be giving so much of this away! Make me stop talking!" I regret it that much, when by the time I actually do these stories I'm sure you'll have forgotten everything. I bet already some things in "Some Verses" will still be able to come as a surprise. Haha, maybe you'll be like "I'm glad you did such-and-such scene this way" and I'll have to say, "...That was YOUR suggestion!" LOL.
