I don't like it but in light of your recently comparing it to Brian/Justin I can at least understand

Whaaaat? Do you mean when I was wondering if the Brian and Justin relationship has actually influenced some people to be open-minded to ships with great age differences in fandom? That's not comparing them. B & J are 13 years apart. Snape and Harry are probably almost 20 years apart. B/J is a very rare relationship unlike anything else ever written or seen on screen that only makes sense in a weird way since Brian is practically a boy in a man's body who just wants to have fun fun fun. Snape's an old crabby arsehole who hates Harry. The two ships have absolutely nothing in common besides being weird with the age difference.

It just makes it more understandable that they could have any kind of appealing dynamic at all, because the reason S/H is so mentally unapproachable is because even in addition to all the other problems with canon that make the likelihood of the relationship quite obsolete, your first reaction is that they are first and foremost way too far apart in age, and B/J has this way of making you buy into the relationship even when their appearances consistently pull your attention to the age gap. I can only respect the fandom in an, "Okay, let's twist his character only so far and pretend his scornful attitude is more Kinney-ish than one of actual villainy and then have fun with it", just as we all like to pretend that Snape is kind of attractive when he's repeatedly described in the books as being fugly.
