“Jet shook his head, stupid grin on his face. It occurred to him in that moment that he didn’t really like a single person on his ship. He wouldn’t really single out any of them to hang out with, even Spike. They weren’t really his buddies. They weren’t his pals. They were something else entirely...

Maybe family was just the people who were left when you figured out you didn’t fit anywhere else. Maybe a family was really a bunch of people who only fit together by default. And he was cool with that. After all, it’s only natural that freaks flock together.”

Agent Orange is one of the most talented fanfic authors I have ever read work by, in any fandom. He realizes that although completely inaccurate characterization and deviation from canon can be fun, the real purpose of fan fiction (at least in my opinion) is to create something that feels like an extension or further elaboration of the series. And you just can't do that without being faithful to the original material. Agent Orange's fic fit comfortably with episodes of the show because he knows the universe and the characters very well. He mentions details like Spike's idolization of Bruce Lee and has Edward's insane and childlike way of talking down perfectly.

"Freaks Flock Together" is my personal favorite of all his stories because it deals with an idea I've always agreed with: that the relationships between the four main characters resemble those of a family. Maybe Jet isn't quite old enough to be Spike's father figure and all of them but Ed are too old to have a curfew, but the crew of the Bebop fight so much and seem to have such distaste for eachother that the only explanation for their toleration of one another is that they are, deep down, a family structure.

This one of his stories in particular also has the perfect balance of comedy, action, and occasional serious drama for anyone, just like episodes of the show. Any fan of Bebop will like "Freaks," period.

Title: Freaks Flock Together
Author: Agent Orange
Rating: R
Characters/Pairings: whole crew
Summary: The Bebop gang goes undercover at an institute for troubled families to catch a shrink with a shady past. Luckily, dysfunction isn't a stretch for them.
Link: "Lee?" "Yeah. As in Bruce."

A Cowboy's Unofficial Guide To the Open Road - Faye drags Spike along with her on an old-fashioned road trip so she can look for a missing piece from her past. A great exploration of Spike and Faye's very interesting sibling-like relationship.
