1. "To Be Alone With You" - Sufjan Stevens
I don't know what it is about this simple little song that totally breaks my heart in two. So many people have picked this one for mixes but I can't imagine a BBM fanmix without it. It's just too perfect.
I'd swim across lake Michigan / I'd sell my shoes
I'd give my body to be back again / In the rest of the room
To be alone with you
You gave your body to the lonely / They took your clothes
You gave up a wife and a family / You gave your goals
To be alone with me
To be alone with me you went up on the tree / I'll never know the man who loved me

2. "Wish You Were Here" - Pink Floyd
This has special meaning to me in relation to BBM since I used the lyrics for my fanfic Red and White. It fits perfectly with how Jack and Ennis gave up freedom and what they loved for a fake, confining life. And what's more, this song ends with the sound of wind so it just has that Brokeback feel.
Did they get you to trade
Hot ashes for trees
Hot air for the cool breeze
Cold comfort for change
Did you exchange
How I wish you were here
We’re just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl
Year after year

3. "He Lays In The Reins" - Iron & Wine
I just adore Iron and Wine and their songs are perfect for BBM.
One more drink tonight as your gray stallion rests
Where he lays in the reins
For all of the speed and the strength he gave
One more tired thing, the gray moon on the rise
When your want from the day
Makes you to curse in your sleep at night

4. "Can't Hardly Stand It" - Charlie Feathers
I've always liked this track from the Kill Bill Vol. 2 soundtrack, and now cannot help but relate the title to a certain quote from the movie.
Well, my spirit's low / I miss you so
I stand alone and watch you go
I can't hardly stand it / You're troublin' me
I can't hardly stand it / It just can't be
Well, you don't know, babe, I love you so
You got me all tore up, all tore up

5. "Mojo Pin" - Jeff Buckley
An absolutely beautiful, soulfully-sung song of longing that works as a quiet, internal expression of what Jack and Ennis were both feeling those four years apart.
If only you’d come back to me
If you laid at my side
I wouldn’t need no mojo pin to keep me satisfied
Don’t wanna weep for you, I don’t wanna know
I’m blind and tortured, the white horses flow
The memories fire, the rhythms fall slow
Black beauty I love you so

6. "Sunshine Of Your Love" - Cream
A classic rock long-distance love song, because I think there's not enough music put on these fanmixes that is from the actual time the story took place. I think it fits Jack and Ennis's feelings when they're about to be reunited, or at any time they're about to see each other again.
I’ll soon be with you my love,
To give you my dawn surprise.
I’ll be with you darling soon,
I’ll be with you when the stars start falling.
I’ve been waiting so long
To be where I’m going
In the sunshine of your love.

7. "Wicked Game" - Chris Isaak
Reminds me of how Ennis tried so hard to resist wanting something that would only end up hurting him but it was, of course, hopeless.
The world was on fire
No one could save me but you
Strange what desire will make foolish people do
I never dreamed that I'd love somebody like you
I never dreamed that I'd lose somebody like you
No I don't wanna to fall in love
No I don't wanna fall in love with you

8. "I Am A Rock" - Simon & Garfunkel
Maybe this is silly, but when I found out what the name Ennis Del Mar means, I automatically thought of this song.
I am a rock
I am an island
I’ve built walls
A fortress deep and mighty
That none may penetrate
Don’t talk of love
But I’ve heard the word before
It’s sleeping in my memory

9. "Shame" - PJ Harvey
I keep changing my mind about whose point of view this fits better, but so many lines are undeniably Jack and Ennis either way.
I don't need no lasso
I don't need no ball and chain
I don't need anything with you
Such a shame, shame, shame
You changed my life
We were as green as grass
And I was hypnotized
From the first 'til the last
Kiss of shame, shame, shame

10. "A Fond Farewell" - Elliott Smith
Practically any Elliott song can be applied to BBM because they're generally all about feelings of loneliness and alienation and struggles with identity -all that good angsty stuff. "Pitseleh" actually fits even better, but I just like this one more.
This is not my life
It's just a fond farewell to a friend
It's not what I'm like
It's just a fond farewell to a friend
Who couldn't get things right
Fond farewell to a friend

11. "Melissa" - The Allman Brothers Band
Because it just should have been on the soundtrack, dammit. Hearing this song now depresses me beyond words.
Knowing many, loving none
Bearing sorrow havin’ fun
But back home he’ll always run
To sweet Melissa
Freight train, each car looks the same, all the same.
And no one knows the gypsy’s name
No one hears his lonely sigh
There are no blankets where he lies
In all his deepest dreams the gypsy flies
With sweet Melissa

12. "The Sea And The Rhythm" - Iron & Wine
To me this fits BBM just because of the feeling and tone more than anything. It describes a quiet moment between two lovers who are isolated and alone and the kind of peace Jack and Ennis were able to have only for brief times during their lives.
Our hands they seek the end of afternoon
My hands believe and move over you
Tonight, we're the sea and the rhythm there
The waves and the wind and night is black
Your hands they move like waves over me
Beneath the moon, tonight, we're the sea

13. "Unchained Melody" - The Righteous Brothers
Even if you don't know the classics you may remember this song from that famous sex scene in Ghost. One of my favorite love songs ever, it's a passionate expression of love and longing that transcends and survives any distance and any amount of time.
Oh, my love, my darlin
I've hungered for your touch
A long, lonely time
And time goes by so slowly
And time can do so much
Are you still mine?

14. "The Maker Makes" - Rufus Wainwright
Kills me every time I hear it. The lyrics are so pathetically sad, it's just devastating to listen to.
One more chain I break
To get me closer to you
One more chain does the maker make
To keep me from bustin' through
Oh Lord, how I know
Oh Lord, how I see
That only can the maker make
A happy man of me

15. "Comin' Back To Me" - Jefferson Airplane
This song is so quiet and distant-sounding that it kind of makes you feel lonely and abandoned just listening to it. Perfect for Ennis's thoughts at the end of the movie.
The summer had inhaled
And held its breath too long
The winter looked the same
As if it had never gone
And through an open window
Where no curtain hung
I saw you comin' back to me
One begins to read between
The pages of a look
The shape of sleepy music
And suddenly, you're hooked.
I saw you
I saw you comin' back to me.

Date: 2006-04-10 12:08 am (UTC)However, I have no idea how to make the songs work once downloaded it goes my itunes then says I'm blocked from listening to the song and need some sort of a password. Whatever, you have an interesting take on these songs and the implied relation to the movie. I too tend to find songs that remind me of movies, and emotions similar to emotions sprung on by movies, especially BBM. I'll never listen to Comin' Back to Me again without thinking of Ennis.
