"Watching Ennis del Mar walk through a crowd was like looking at a shard of glass among grains of sand. The fractured piece was not noticeable to the casual observer, hiding easily among the smooth, uniform grains, but if the light hit it just right, a sudden glint would reveal its position, and when touched, it cut deep."

This lovely one-shot is the final piece of BBM fanfic from Sheera (asexual_amoeba or trascedenza on her writing journal), and probably the best work she's done. It captures the essence of Ennis's character beautifully and completely in few and simple words. It was written with many references to the short story and perhaps requires familiarity with Annie Proulx's text to fully appreciate it.
