Brokeback Mountain begins with the sound of wind as the opening title appears. Most of the film is generally quiet and peaceful-sounding; even when there is musical score, the music has a certain quality of silence in its pauses and hesitations. The sound of wind is constantly there in the background, though you may not notice it at all, creating a free and unstifled atmosphere. Jack is the character who pursues happiness and is free as the wind. When Alma is talking to Ennis in their bedroom with her arms around him, she casually says the word "lonely"; Ennis's eyes automatically glaze over and his mind is obviously on somebody far away; a strong gust of wind is suddenly heard from outside. When Jack enters Aguirre's trailer to inquire about working again, the fan above his head moves as if in a breeze. "Well, look what the wind blew in," Aguirre says.
