1. Guess who got tickets to see Angels In America with Zachary Quinto in it? MEEEEEEE. *flail*

And by that I mean I'm seeing AIA with Zach in it as a bonus, not just going to see Zach in a play. A lot of ZQ fans are going to go to this for him and be introduced to an awesome work of writing in the process, but this is my favorite play and one I've always hoped I'd one day get to see on the stage. So when I found out there was going to be a new production with him playing Louis Ironson, I knew I had to make this happen somehow or pretty much regret not going for the rest of my liiiiife.

2. You know...I could already write a whole book on why it's hard participating in the Twilight fandom and being associated with those people and often automatically judged because of it, even though that's the only fandom I've ever been in only out of interest in exploring the neglected potential of certain things or just generally ripping apart everything that's wrong with the foundation of canon and having a surprising amount of fun trying to make it into something better. (So I kind of like the fantasy universe of it, okay? Shoot me. I'm honestly sick of the complaining about the fact that the vampires sparkle because I've never been into vampires and am not a dorky purist about the concept and all, plus even if they weren't called "vampires" in this series, guess what, it would still be incredibly stupid and not at all appealing that the guy SPARKLES. And I'm still not ashamed to proclaim I do think a lot of characters whose names are not Edward or Bella are actually pretty awesome, as if SMeyer practically made them that way by accident.)

But anyway, I can usually deal with the annoying stuff I run into just because I'm part of a sub-fandom of people who only like certain elements of the series and generally agree that it's not too well-written but are somehow still drawn to it. Usually I understand where the hate comes from quite enough so it doesn't get to me. But when it comes to this and I'm getting random dumbass comments on my really old fanfic from obvious trolls committing their time to searching for these people and making fun of them, it goes past the point of being annoying and just gets hilarious. To think someone can actually succeed at being a bigger loser than one of the Twilight Moms.

Okay...so nobody beats the Twilight Moms at having no lives. But still.

3. Been catching up on new Mad Men and this season is SO GOOD so far.

- LOL forever @ pretentious hipsters who do what Andy Warhol tells them.

- I feel like I'm the only person alive who doesn't really have a problem with Peggy's boyfriend.

- But oh Christ, Pete/Peggy out of nowhere. Guh. It's become so weird to remember that I literally hated them together when they were actually an active item in season 1, not just because I feel so differently now but because I rarely have that kind of reaction to canon ships. Even if I don't see much appeal in a relationship being developed, I can usually go with the flow, but I was like NOOOO and now I'm like :'(((((. And I've definitely more or less said that before, but it merits repeating because I literally keep liking the idea of Pete/Peggy more and more as they keep growing further apart.

Meanwhile Pete and Trudy continue to be adorable and lovely, and for some reason I have this bad feeling that Trudy is going to end up dying in childbirth or something tragic like that, even though if that ended up being how Pete would eventually end up back with Peggy that would seem so cheap and...not Weiner. Or maybe something is finally going to happen between them again when you really don't want it to because it will be wrong, wrong, wrong. That would be more like Weiner. Haha.

- Definitely loved Lane being unexpectedly hilarious, if in a...depressing way. "This film is very good!" *dies*

- NEEDS KINSEY BACK. NOT TO MENTION SAL. We're six episodes in now, I've been patient, now where are they? LOL.

4. Okay, meme...

Replace one of the questions with a new one. Tag 11 people. Them's the rules and apparently they're pretty serious.

→ What song are you currently addicted to?
"I'll Believe In Anything" by Wolf Parade.

→ What book are you currently reading?
The Picture of Dorian Gray. Coincidentally at the same time that my grandma is reading it. (Recently I randomly got a letter from her for the first time in many years telling me how she checked out a book by "that naughty, naughty, adorable, irresistible Oscar Wilde"...LMAO.)

→ What’s the latest movie you watched?
Hero. I'm in the process of some intense brainstorming for a pretty epic novel-length Avatar: TLA future-fic and so am exposing myself nearly exclusively to martial arts movies, action anime, and other related genres of stuff right now. 'Cause that's just how my brain works.

→ What is your favorite hang-out?
24-hour diners.

→ What's your favorite musical instrument?
This is always hard to say. Probably the oboe, but the erhu is also very beautiful, and I think banjos are really cool as part of unconventional instrumentation in rock/alternative music. Or how about the sampler. (Incidentally none of these are one of the three instruments I've ever learned to play, haha.)

→ What web sites do you always visit when you go online?
Facebook. LJ. Often Amazon. Sometimes OKCupid, which should be called The Man Pit (okay, it's not that bad, LOL).

→ What was the last thing you bought?
Stocked up on Yogi kombucha green tea. Damn that stuff is delicious.

→ If you won 10,000 bucks today, what would you do with it?
Save it for a place of residence.

→ When was the last time you cried?
Thursday, a little. My last day at the job I had because the store is closing and the bummer of it all sort of hit me all at once. It wasn't the kind of job I wanted to stay with for a long time, but the idea of starting all over again somewhere else already is kind of depressing and I'm going to miss a lot of the people there.

→ What's the last thing that made you happy?
Watching my cat and dog act silly together.

→ Do you want to learn another language?
Been there, done that. Je ne parle pas japonais bien. Sumimasen, keisatsu o yonde kudasai.

→ Five things you can’t live without.
My dear iPod Serge, my friends, [livejournal.com profile] ninety6tears and our talking violin inside jokes, expressing myself in writing, Diet Coke

→ Favorite fashion accessory?
Shoes...if that counts.

This comment is just to say that I love Angels in America and I am extremely jealous. Although I have only a passing interest in ZQ, I can definitely see him as Louis.

I bet that was awesome!

I'm totally using that song for my Kara/Lee fanmix I've been meaning to do since forever, too. :)

I've been told "You Are A Runner and I Am My Father's Son" is popular for them. I have "I'll Believe In Anything" but I don't think I've ever paid attention to the lyrics...
WHEN YOU GUNNA MAKE THAT MIX, HUH??

a) OMG I'VE BEEN TAGGED! THE PRESSURE! ;)

b) Woot, have fun with The Quinto!

c) Twilight fandom, you're still batshit insane and that includes the haters. I gave up on improving the source material ages ago, when Breaking Dawn came out and filled me with too much DO NOT WANT to continue my chaptered fic. But I admire your perseverance, bb, I really do.

FEEL THE PRESSURE. LOL.

I really don't know how I've lasted as long as I have in that fandom. :/ It probably helps that I never finished Breaking Dawn and prefer to imagine that rocks fell and everyone died, which would have been so much better.

I understand completely because that's the only aspect I now like about the series; the idea of exploring different characters that were never used and different stories. That's the only appeal for me now and it's been like that for quite a while.

I'm getting random dumbass comments on my really old fanfic from obvious trolls committing their time to searching for these people and making fun of them, it goes past the point of being annoying and just gets hilarious.

Your response was TRULY A+! Nothing says GTFO like a Tara&Lala icon. As for the meme, I was tagged over a week ago and have already done this one.

I totally feel you on #2.

I've ever been in only out of interest in exploring the neglected potential of certain things
This is what makes me participate in any fandom, something that I wanted to happen/or be explored in canon, wasn't. Which is why Twilight is a particularly amazing candidate. So much was just left hanging. It's too bad that the fandom if full of Twilight-can-do-no-wrong.

I do think a lot of characters whose names are not Edward or Bella are actually pretty awesome, as if SMeyer practically made them that way by accident.)
Oh my goodness, YES. Wanting to know more about the Cullens is the desire that spurned me into searching out Twilight fic.

Well, exploring the unexplored is always part of the appeal of fandom. But usually when I write fic it's essentially out of respect and admiration for the source material, even if I did think it was a flaw of the canon that certain things weren't already covered or explored, but with Twilight I obviously have a whole different approach to it.

I guess a lot of people are often motivated to write fanfic out of some kind of disappointment with the canon, but sometimes I find ambiguities and open ends to be a good thing, especially because it gives you the freedom to fill in the holes yourself. Only with Twilight fandom did I come to understand having a different kind of motivation because certain characters or plot elements were handled in ways that didn't leave me wanting more in a positive way but were actually unbelievable failures that made me think "Oh come on, I could do better." LOL.

I've been meaning to watch the Dorian Gray movie that came out recently for ages now (I've read the book). And thanks for tagging but I did this meme a while back already and probably won't be doing it again.

And an obligatory: lol, Twilight.

I need to see that, too. The cast looks great. I've heard differing opinions of it but I'm guessing a lot of people just compare it too much to the book.

Yeah, don't worry about the meme. I saw after I tagged all these people that a lot of them had already done it. Whatev. :)

1. Mmmm, Angels. I've only ever seen the mini series version, which just had so, so many brilliant performances in it, and I'd love to see it on stage. With ZQ, that's like... awesomeness squared. Full review after the show, please! :)

2. Whee, I wrote a whole essay on it once - how Twilight is this train wreck you can't look away from, and that more over you want to get in and fix it. I've had this exact same conversation more times than I can count (mostly across comment threads on various fic), and although I've gotten kinda tired of the fandom and trying to justify its existence (umm, ignore the part of me that is currently trying to write a goddamn epic pre-Twilight Jasper/Bella AU and bashing her head against walls because this entails charting out Jasper's entire history). Essentially, I completely agree with that comment you made somewhere above, about how the essence of fanfic is filling in the gaps or chasing loose ends; few things have generated more "What ifs?" than Twilight, even if those What ifs were generated out of disgust and contempt. And kudos on your response to the trolls. :D

3. I am going to steer clear of Mad Men for now, because I just started Season One, and my cousin wants me to speed through so she can have someone else to pick apart the latest episode with. XD

4. Ooh, tagged! I must needs be delivering, then. Let me just say again, because it needs to be said, that you are in my brain, or I am in yours, or some mutual brainspace is being shared here. The Wolf Parade. The Wilde. The ATLA and all the research it entails. Have I mentioned how utterly thrilled I am that you are writing ATLA and how I still need to comment on the epicness that is your picspam?

And dudette, what are you watching for martial arts films or action anime? Hero is fantastic, I love Zhang Yimou. I guess that means you've done House of Flying Daggers, too? If you haven't already, you should check out the 2008 "redux" of Wong Kar Wai's Ashes of Time - it's not like any other martial arts film I've ever seen, it's impressionistic art house lost love melancholia... with sword fighting. I know Ong-Bak is technically muay thai, which I don't think is a style shown in the ATLA universe, but it has my favourite movie chase scene of all time. Also, Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle are soooo over the top (hence my over the top love for them!) but I can see Stephen Chow's sense of humour being placed along a kind of continuum alongside ATLA. Also, because I have to say it: Samurai Champloo. I know it's, umm, samurai and not really martial arts (samurai times break dancing!) but the creativity and artistry of those fight scenes is inspiring. Oh, also, anything Jet Li? I really liked The One and, er, not just because Jason Statham's in it. I saw the yt clips where he does Ba Gua. Also, er, can I put up the Korean film 3-Iron up as a rec? It's not a martial arts movie - it's a very strange, beautiful, and nearly wordless love story - but this one move that the main guy pulls is very similar to something that Aang pulls on Zuko waaay back in the first episode.

I... am stopping now. Because I need to sleep. And I am rambling. XD

The Mad Men episode I'm pretty sure you're referring to that your cousin really wants you to get to was absolutely incredible. I want to pick it apart with you, too! Haha.

Oh, I think I started with House of Flying Daggers. That's one of my favorite movies. And I did some Stephen Chow, too (It's like you knew already! LOL). And went through Champloo for the first time (I can't believe it took me this long to see it because I've been a huge Cowboy Bebop fan for so long) and thought it was pretty much simultaneously one of the most badass and moving shows I've ever seen. You can definitely see the influence that had on some of the design and fight scenes in AtLA.

I'm definitely going to check out your other recommendations, they sound really cool. THANK YOU. This is why you should feel free to spam me with lots of comments any time. :D

oh I'm so jealous of you! Both that you get to see your favourite play (and it *is* an awesome one, I've watched the mini-series), and that you get to see Quinto!

ah, Twilight. I agree with you totally. I really like the series - for everyone BUT Bella and Edward. Calisle and Jasper alone are awesome characters, and I love fandom for giving me gorgeous fics of Jasper especially. And I *still* haven't read your Twilight fic, but I WILL at some point, I promise you that!!

Also, Hero is my absolute favourite martial arts film. The colours alone are to die for, but when you add the interweaving stories and the awesome kung-fu, and Jet Li, and Zhang Ziyi.... Love. Just love.

I need to remember to do the meme tomorrow. :)
