I already recommended "Crossroads" by Emmyjean, but this is actually my favorite story by her. It is about what Remus was doing during Goblet of Fire when he was living by himself. It has a very quiet tone, but quiet in an awkward silence kind of way that you want to go away. Remus goes many days at a time in which he does not talk to anybody and has very little things to do to pass the time, and as you read it you really want something to happen. Gradually the story builds up to something happening as it gets into what he does every week when he goes into town to buy food. There is a young woman whose name he doesn't even know who he sees for just five minutes every week when he goes into the bakery she works at. This is the best part of his week. In his boredom and isolation he thinks about her a lot because he runs out of other things to think about. And he is a very lonely man, after all.

I'm thinking this story will have lost a lot of its effectiveness because of Book 6. When I read it a long time ago I thought it was the most horribly sad thing ever, but now that we know Remus will live happily ever after with someone it's not nearly as sad to read about lonely, unlaid Remus (LOL, excuse my wording). But I suppose you can read this and think of it as what things were like for him before he found someone strong enough to deal with his burden and want to be with him.

Title: Iris
Author: Emmyjean
Characters: Remus/OC, Sirius
Rating: PG
Summary: "They could make use of the perfect spring night...walk in a park, count stars...all the things he’d always read that people do when they’re in love. All the things he’d always read in books, the things he’d always listened to other people describe while fighting silent, miserable jealousy." Remus's thoughts about a stranger get a little carried away. But perhaps he's not the only one who is lonely.
Link: He wished he could ask her name...

I also recommend by Emmyjean:
The Consequences Of Snooping - Cute, funny story about Ron freaking out when he finds a picture of Ginny and Harry in Harry's stuff. I like how it keeps you guessing at whether Harry really likes Ginny or not.
Sponges, Spills, and Sweaters - Harry and Ginny spend the night together...in detention. This is also a pre-canon-ship, just hinting-at H/G story. Has some pretty funny moments.
